The Navy Gap Year Mechanical Engineer role is a unique opportunity where you’ll get to work alongside fully qualified Mechanical Engineers, all without needing any prior qualifications. You'll experience what it's like to work with mechanical engineering systems, get paid to travel and gain invaluable life and work experience, while making friendships that could last a lifetime.

You’ll learn how Navy engineers manage the operation, maintenance and repair of the engineering plan critical to the ship's mission. You'll be be immersed in this world of Navy innovation and engineering, exposed to a full range of engineering systems, including diesel engines, gas turbines, ventilation, power generation or hydraulics. These specialists have dealt with engineering challenges both at sea and ashore, so they have a wealth of knowledge to pass on. You’ll also gain leadership skills as you watch them oversee their teams to keep the ship ready for service. 

You will be supported throughout your training by professional and enthusiastic Navy personnel who will provide the guidance necessary for you to get the most out of this experience. Your Gap Year will be broken up into different stages. This will give you the opportunity to receive basic training and to tour Navy's shore establishments. You will experience life at sea, as well as what it is like to be employed ashore. As a Navy Gap Year officer, you will be provided with the opportunity to contribute to the operation of the ship or unit.

Your training will begin at the Royal Australian Naval College (RANC), HMAS Creswell in Jervis Bay, NSW, where you'll complete a 20-week course alongside other new Navy officers prior to continuing with the program. RANC is an energetic environment where you will be challenged to meet Navy standards of fitness, demeanour and behaviour.

Coupled with the highest standard of leadership training, the skills you'll gain across this role are transferable to other management and leadership positions and will provide you a unique edge.

At the end of the Gap Year program, you can choose to continue your career in the Navy or use the skills and experiences you’ve gained to move into an alternative career path. There’s no obligation to serve beyond the one-year program period.

The role of the Aircraft Safety Equipment Maintainer (Aeronautical Life Support Fitter) is to maintain the aircraft mounted and aircrew mounted aeronautical life support equipment and safety and survival equipment within the ADF. The Aeronautical Life Support Trade is to ensure that aeronautical life support equipment utilised within the Defence environment is correctly fitted and maintained to ensure operational airworthiness and mission capability. Aircraft Safety Equipment Maintainers are also responsible for conducting aircrew and passenger training on the application of aeronautical life support equipment.

The responsibilities of the Aeronautical Life Support trade include but are not limited to:

• Manufacture, remove, inspect, repair, test and refitting of aeronautical life support equipment including textile components
• Fitting and instruction on the operation of personal flying equipment
• Procurement, packaging, storage and identification of safety and life support equipment
• Explosive ordnance handling and inspection of rescue pyrotechnics
• Provide training and safety briefs to aircrew and passengers on aeronautical safety and survival equipment and
• Aircraft servicing, ground handling and replenishments.

In addition, Aircraft Safety Equipment Maintainers operate industrial sewing machines in the manufacture of various fabric components in support of aircraft and ADF requirements.

Working Conditions. The working environment is normally a comfortable climate controlled environment. Outdoor work is required at times when performing on-aircraft maintenance or in field conditions during aircrew training exercises.

There is a likelihood of deployments for periods of six months or more, with a requirement to work intensively for long, irregular hours.

You may at times during your career, have the opportunity to also work on aircraft belonging to the Navy and Army and be employed within Navy or Army Units.

Hazards. Inherent hazards exist in tasks associated with moving machinery, handling and inspection of pyrotechnic devices, compressed gas cylinders and the use of dangerous chemicals and substances. Minor cuts and bruises may be sustained, but the possibility exists of sustaining more serious injury. Personal protective equipment is provided where necessary and its use is enforced. Safe working habits and practices are mandatory and ensure that possible risks to personnel are minimised.

Physical Effort. Usually the physical effort required is not arduous and is comparable with that required in the allied aircraft trades.

Manual Dexterity and Physical Co-ordination. Manual dexterity is required during packing and folding of aviation life support systems and operation of industrial sewing machines. This is an acquired specialist dexterity and normal physical co-ordination is adequate.

Speed and Accuracy of Movement. Usually there is no requirement for speed of movement but a high degree of accuracy is required for all tasks associated with aerospace life support systems.

Contact with Others. Aeronautical Life Support Tradespeople are required to frequently interact with aircrew, other technical trades and civilian staff. Additionally, they are required to instil aircrew with a sense of confidence in survival equipment.

Probability and Consequence of Error. The essential requirement for supervision of critical tasks minimises the likelihood of errors; however, the consequences of error can be extreme and may involve the loss of aircraft and, in the most extreme cases, death of personnel.

Responsibility for Money and Material. The job does not involve any responsibility for the care of money but does require the use of expensive materials and equipment for which usual accounting procedures are required.

Trade Criticality. The duties of an Aeronautical Life Support Tradesperson are critical to the operational effectiveness of the RAAF and are vital to the safety and survival of aircrew and passengers.

Weapons Systems. Aircraft Safety Equipment Maintainers are employed (almost exclusively) within one of the following Weapons Systems:

• Fighter (F/A-18 Hornet, Hawk, PC9)
• Maritime (AP3C Orion)
• Strike (F/A-18F Super Hornet) and
• Transport (Hercules, C-17 Globemaster, A330)

Your role:

This isn’t your ordinary administration or HR job. In this highly critical role, you’ll support all aspects of Navy personnel management and administration on a ship or ashore. You’ll be responsible for managing human resource functions, crew administration and coordination of executive processes and procedures—providing advice to the Command Team and management accordingly.

As a Personnel Administration Specialist, you’ll provide personnel management advice to the Command Team while also supporting officers and sailors with their service, leave and travel entitlements, and deployment administration.

The role can be broken down into two parts, consisting of professional tasks and general ship duties.

When working ashore, your professional tasks will include preparing and dispatching correspondence, office admin, maintaining documentation, general HR functions and processing financial conditions of service, among others.

When working at sea, you’ll be involved in your professional role as well as tasks that affect the operation of the whole ship. These may include being part of the medical emergency team, first response team for incidents or assisting in boat and aviation operations that happen at sea, all which provides great variety day to day.

Fitter Course.

Duration: Duration: 38-42 weeks depending on trainee's ability, changes to courseware or for leave periods (e.g. Christmas Break etc).

Location: HMAS Cerberus at Crib Point, Victoria.

The Fitter Course provides underpinning theoretical knowledge in electronics which is reinforced through conducting practical exercises and assessments on circuit cards using common test equipment. It also includes training on safety, basic use of hand tools, wiring and cable termination, soldering, IT equipment, and Air Force maintenance procedures. The majority of the course is instructed by qualified specialist civilian instructors in a joint Air Force and Navy training environment. A large portion of the course is conducted in Flexible Learning Centres using Computer Aided Instruction (CAI), allowing the trainee some degree of control over the learning pace. Air Force specific modules are conducted in single service classes prior to graduating.

On completion of this training, trainees graduate as an Aircraftman/Aircraftwoman (AC/ACW) Communication Electronic Fitter Grade 1 and are then posted to an air base to undergo on-the-job training. Upon graduation, they are also awarded a Certificate III in Electronics and Communications.

Fitter Progression.

On completion of basic recruit training and the Communication Electronic Fitters course, the member is regraded to AC/ACW Communication Electronic Fitter Grade 1 (CEFITT1). After 12 months of employment as a Fitter Grade 1 and with the Commanding Officers recommendation, the member will be promoted to Leading Aircraftman/Leading Aircraftwoman (LAC/LACW) and regraded to Communication Electronic Fitter Grade 2 (CEFITT2).

Progression to Communication Electronic Technician (CETECH) is achieved after successful completion of 12 months on the job training as a CEFITT2. Eligibility for further promotion through the ranks to Warrant Officer will be in competition with all other eligible members within rank.

ACM Healthcare is working with a government organization and is interested in speaking with Psychologists & Social workers who have an interest in providing clinical support and service quality assurance to ex-military personnel and their families.

Typical duties of the Psychologist/Social Worker will include;

Liaising and forming partnerships with the ADF and other government departments, ex-service organisations, community health and welfare agencies, and all other organisations involved in meeting the identified needs of veteran and defence force communities and families

Collaboratively manage and coordinate the state’s Outreach Program through liaison and negotiation with the client's management and staff through Contribution to the continuous quality improvement of our clients Outreach Program at both state and national levels

Coordination and participation in the selection, orientation and resourcing of suitably qualified and experienced outreach counsellors in line with policy

Facilitation of the delivery of high-quality clinical outreach services for eligible clients in rural and outer metropolitan areas in conjunction with other staff by;

• ensuring referrals are appropriate, timely, and accompanied by the relevant written client and administrative documentation
• applying quality assurance procedures to ensure all aspects of outreach counsellors’ clinical practice, reporting and invoicing meet contractual requirements

Mandatory attributes:

• Qualifications must be that of a psychologist or accredited mental health social worker.
• Mental health accredited social workers must be registered with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW). Working with Children (WWC) and/or Vulnerable People Checks/Clearance must be obtained prior to commencing in the position.
• Both psychologists and mental health social workers must have extensive clinical and relevant management experience. 
• Qualified psychologists must have current registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Registration Agency (AHPRA).

Desirable attributes:

• Community or Defence mental health team experience

• Expertise in treating substance abuse, mood, and anxiety disorders, PTSD
