The Role
In our National team, you will be responsible for supporting employees and managers of APS employees, to manage complex HR matters relating to health, behaviour, performance or change.

Key activities include:

  • Holistic management of complex people cases: integrating Human Resource expertise to progress cases to an appropriate outcome for the employee, managers, and the Defence organisation;
  • Researching, developing and providing tailored HR advice and support to a range of clients across Defence;
  • Building manager capability: assisting in the development and implementation of people projects, strategies and initiatives to enable managers to confidently make informed HR decisions; and
  • Partnering and stakeholder engagement: proactive engagement with Customer and internal groups to develop and maintain strong connections within the Organisation.
As an APS 5 HR Officer, you will work locally in a small team as part of our larger National network. The role is based in Melbourne with a requirement to work from various Defence locations across Victoria/Tasmania as required.

About our Team
This role is in the HR Services Directorate and collectively we rely on each other’s knowledge and strengths to achieve results. You will support the HR Services Team Leader, based in Melbourne, by providing a proactive Customer Relationship Management function to drive the resolution of people matters and cases. You will deliver a high standard of customer service to build trust and provide a seamless and tailored HR solution. You will actively support the Team Leader by providing up to-date and relevant information on complex, critical or high profile matters.

Our Ideal Candidate
To be successful in your role as an APS 5 HR Officer, you will:


  • Have a passion for, and experience in Human Resources and providing HR Services to personnel and managers who are geographically dispersed;
  • The interpretation of Legislation, Policy and working conditions (DEA 2017-2020) for customers will form the backbone of your workload. Your success will be evidenced by sound and timely advice and application of HR practices and procedures across Defence.
  • Be able to manage a challenging caseload across a broad HR portfolio with quality and a high attention to detail. You will enjoy a variety in daily work, have strong organisational and inter-personal skills, be customer service focused, having the ability to deal with HR issues and change in a proactive, positive and dynamic way.
  • The role will require excellent communication skills whilst responding to a range of HR related enquiries often of a complex nature, working collaboratively with others, presenting at various forums and actively engaging with stakeholders.
  • Have demonstrated customer service skills and be able to build relationships with key stakeholders to ensure the delivery of seamless HR services that continues to meet the changing needs of our customers.
